Ms. Foundation

Founded in 1973, the Ms. Foundation for Women is the first and leading women's fund and the foundation engaged across the United States to build women's collective power to ignite change. The Ms. Foundation delivers strategic grants, capacity building and leadership development to organizations at local, state, Tribal and national levels working for policy change and culture change across the broad areas of women's health, economic justice, ending violence and building democracy. With its long history of bringing the leadership and perspectives of women who are most marginalized to the center, and building the capacity of diverse women and their organizations to connect across issues, geography and with other social justice groups, the Foundation strengthens social movements and brings our nation closer to its democratic ideals.

Ms. Foundation Accomplishments:

  • Receiving a Presidential Award for Excellence in Microenterprise Development for our longstanding commitment to improve economic prospects for low-income women;
  • Distributing millions of dollars in grants each year to local, state, and national organizations to seed and sustain innovative programs for women and girls;

North Star Fund

North Star Fund is the community foundation that advances the collective good. For 29 years, we have been the first to fund the fight for equality, economic justice and peace in New York City.

By organizing donors, raising money for grants, and providing technical assistance, we support activism that focuses on the root causes of poverty, racism, homophobia and gender discrimination.

Since our founding in 1979, North Star has distributed over 27 million dollars to 3,709 groups working to ensure a more equitable and democratic city for all New Yorkers. From kitchen table activists to national coalitions, North Star's courageous grantees have led efforts on issues ranging from better schools, housing and health care, to protecting civil liberties, stopping domestic violence, creating living wage jobs, and advocating for peace, freedom and human rights.

The Twenty-First Century Foundation (21CF)

21CF is a unique organization that leads, innovates, and influences giving for Black community change.  As the nation’s preeminent Black-led and -governed foundation, 21CF

  • Identifies the Black-run organizations and leaders addressing them
  • Engages donors in new forms of Black philanthropy
  • Fosters cooperation among donors, grantees, community leaders, business people, and policy-makers
  • Leverages the resources of traditional high-impact institutional allies such as the Ford Foundation and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, as well as emerging donor networks like Gulf South Allied Funders

The Twenty-First Century Foundation emphasizes advocacy, leadership development, and building organizational capacity to stimulate positive, sustainable change. Founded in 1971, the Foundation has become a transforming force in the lives of Black children, families, and communities throughout the nation.

Social Justice Fund Northwest

Social Justice Fund NW is a member-funded foundation that supports the creation of a just society through fundraising, grantmaking, and member involvement. The foundation provides essential resources to organizations in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming to strengthen grassroots efforts in the broad-based movement for progressive, systemic social change.

Each year, Social Justice Fund NW raises funds from its members and friends, and then grants that money to non-profit social justice organizations in the Northwest and Northern Rockies. Using an extensive, thoughtful process, we make grants to strategic and effective community-based organizations in five states. Our approach allows you to assist many different social change causes with a single contribution backed by the experience and research of our staff and members.

Founded in 1978 as A Territory Resource Foundation, Social Justice Fund Northwest is now celebrating 30 years of funding grassroots community organizations in the Northwest.

Women Donors Network

The Women Donors Network creates community, educational opportunities, and action strategies that help philanthropists better use their wealth and influence to effect progressive social change. This is accomplished through the exchange of knowledge, information, and experience and collaborative action among a stable and expanding group of women who share key values.  As of the fall of 2008, the membership consists of over 160 women from around the country.

Members distribute at least $25,000 per year to nonprofit progressive causes. WDN members:

  • Are serious about their philanthropy and increasing their effectiveness as donors;
  • Have a desire for a community of peers where they can learn and share with others around issues of progressive philanthropy;
  • Want to develop their personal power and become stronger leaders; and
  • Seek to leverage their resources and increase the impact of their individual giving.
